Methanol is produced industrially from synthesis gas according to the reversible reaction: CO(g)+2H2(g)⇌CH3OH(g)\text{CO}(g) + 2\text{H}_2(g) \rightleftharpoons \text{CH}_3\text{OH}(g) A chemist mixes 1.00 mol1.00\,\text{mol} of CO(g)\text{CO}(g) and 2.00 mol2.00\,\text{mol} of H2(g)\text{H}_2(g) in a 10.0 dm310.0\,\text{dm}^3 reactor at 500 K500\,\text{K}. At equilibrium, the concentration of CH3OH(g)\text{CH}_3\text{OH}(g) is 0.0400 mol dm−30.0400\,\text{mol}\,\text{dm}^{-3}.
(a)
Calculate the equilibrium constant, KcK_c, for this reaction at 500 K500\,\text{K}. [3 marks]
(b)
After equilibrium is established, an additional 0.500 mol0.500\,\text{mol} of CO(g)\text{CO}(g) is injected into the reactor at constant volume and temperature. Calculate the reaction quotient, QcQ_c, immediately after injection and deduce the direction in which the reaction will proceed. [3 marks]
(c)
Evaluate the effect on the value of KcK_c if the volume of the reactor were halved at constant temperature, assuming equilibrium is re-established. [1 mark]
