Vanadium(V) oxide (
V2O5) is used as a catalyst in the Contact Process for the manufacture of sulfuric acid. In one step of the catalytic cycle,
V2O5 is reduced to vanadium(IV) oxide (
VO2) by sulfur dioxide (
SO2), producing sulfate ions (
SO42−). In a subsequent step,
VO2 is re-oxidised back to
V2O5 by oxygen gas.
Standard electrode potentials at
298K:
SO42−(aq)+4H+(aq)+2e−⇌SO2(g)+2H2O(l)E∘=+0.17V
V2O5(s)+2H+(aq)+2e−⇌V2O4(s)+H2O(l)E∘=+1.00V
The Contact Process operates at approximately
450°C.
