A chemical reaction is modelled by the differential equation dCdt=−kC2\dfrac{dC}{dt} = -kC^2, where C(t)C(t) is the concentration of a reactant in mol L−1\text{mol\,L}^{-1} at time tt seconds, and kk is a positive constant.
(a)
Show that C(t)=1kt+1C0C(t) = \dfrac{1}{kt + \dfrac{1}{C_0}}, where C0=C(0)C_0 = C(0). [3 marks]
(b)
Given that C(0)=2.0 mol L−1C(0) = 2.0\,\text{mol\,L}^{-1} and C(10)=0.50 mol L−1C(10) = 0.50\,\text{mol\,L}^{-1}, calculate the value of kk. [2 marks]
(c)
Hence calculate the time, in seconds, at which the concentration reaches 0.10 mol L−10.10\,\text{mol\,L}^{-1}. Give your answer correct to 3 significant figures. [2 marks]
