A function hh is defined by h(x)=x2+2x+5−(x+1)xh(x) = \dfrac{\sqrt{x^2 + 2x + 5} - (x+1)}{x} for x≠0x \neq 0.
(a)
Show that h(x)h(x) can be written in the form h(x)=1+2x+5x2−1−1xh(x) = \sqrt{1 + \dfrac{2}{x} + \dfrac{5}{x^2}} - 1 - \dfrac{1}{x} for x>0x > 0, and hence prove that lim⁡x→∞h(x)=0\displaystyle\lim_{x \to \infty} h(x) = 0. [4 marks]
(b)
Show that for x<0x < 0, h(x)=−1+2x+5x2−1−1x.h(x) = -\sqrt{1 + \frac{2}{x} + \frac{5}{x^2}} - 1 - \frac{1}{x}. Hence determine lim⁡x→−∞h(x)\displaystyle\lim_{x \to -\infty} h(x). [3 marks]
(c)
The graph of y=h(x)y = h(x) has two distinct horizontal asymptotes. State both asymptotes and explain why the asymptote as x→−∞x \to -\infty differs from the asymptote as x→∞x \to \infty, with reference to the role of x2=∣x∣\sqrt{x^2} = |x| in the simplification of h(x)h(x). [3 marks]
