Geometry and Measurement
Geometry and Measurement stops rewarding 'that looks about right' at this level — every construction needs visible compass arcs, every bearing needs three digits, every congruence claim needs a named test. The examiner is checking your method, not your eyeballing: can you justify why a line is a locus, not just draw one that happens to look straight?
Overview
Four strands hide inside this chapter and examiners rotate through all of them: circle theorems (pure angle-chasing), straight-line angle facts and polygons, exact constructions with compass and straightedge, and measurement — units, compound measures, bearings, congruence and similarity. The thread running through all of it is precision: ' is about 38°' scores zero when the mark scheme wants the value stated exactly, and a perpendicular bisector drawn without visible arcs loses the method mark even if the final line is correct.
- Command terms decide the depth required: 'Deduce' wants a stated rule PLUS the numeric answer; 'Construct' wants visible compass arcs, not a ruled guess; 'Justify' wants a chain of logic that rules alternatives out, not just a yes/no.
- Loci and bearings both test the same underlying skill — turning a verbal rule ('equidistant from...', 'on a bearing of...') into an exact geometric object: a line, a circle, or an angle.
- Congruence, similarity and circle theorems all rely on spotting equal angles or equal ratios from a diagram — mark the corresponding parts on the diagram itself before writing a single equation.
The shape of the chapter
Command terms that decide your mark
| Command term | What it demands | AO | Mark-earning move |
|---|---|---|---|
| Deduce | State a conclusion with the reasoning that leads to it — a bare number with no justification loses the reasoning mark even if correct. | AO2 | Write the rule used (e.g. 'angle bisector splits the angle equally') THEN the value. |
| Construct | Use compass and straightedge only; all arcs must remain visible on the final diagram. | AO4/AO2 | Examiners specifically look for arc marks — erasing them after ruling the line loses the method mark. |
| Justify | Give a reasoned argument that supports or rejects a statement, using the actual numbers given. | AO2/AO3 | A 'yes/no' with no calculation scores 0; show the check (e.g. substitute the point into the equation) before concluding. |
| Explain | Give reasons based on a named geometric property, not a visual description. | AO2 | 'It looks symmetrical' scores 0 — name the property (equidistant, perpendicular, bisects) instead. |
| Measure | Physically use the scale drawing/ruler and record a value with correct units. | AO1 | State the unit and the implied tolerance (e.g. ± smallest gridline). |
| Calculate | Produce a numeric answer via a shown method. | AO1 | Even a calculator answer needs the formula written first for the method mark. |
