Number and Operations

MYP Mathematics Framework — Number and Operations strand (Year 5)

32 min readStandard~25% of MYP Year 5 Mathematics assessment — the Number strand feeds Criterion A (Knowing & Understanding) and Criterion D (Applying Mathematics in Real-Life Contexts) most heavily

This strand is where marks get lost on arithmetic, not understanding — a perfectly set-up calculation loses the accuracy mark because of a sig-fig slip, a swapped denominator in a percentage error, or a rounded value used where the exact one was needed. Every subtopic below is built around the exact traps examiners keep re-using: comparing a rounded answer to a threshold, mixing up decimal places with significant figures, and forgetting which value goes in the denominator of a percentage error.

Overview — How Number and Operations Fits Together

Every number topic in MYP Year 5 is really about precision and representation: how exactly do you write a number ( vs vs ), and how much of that precision is actually trustworthy once you've rounded, measured, or estimated it? The strand splits into 'representing numbers' (real number system, scientific notation, fractions/decimals), 'operating on numbers' (exponents, ratio, financial arithmetic), and 'controlling accuracy' (rounding, sig figs, error bounds) — and exam questions almost always test the last group by hiding it inside the first two.

The shape of the chapter

Command terms this strand tests

Command termWhat it demandsAOMark-earning move
CalculateObtain a numerical answer showing the relevant workingCriterion AMethod mark for correct substitution, accuracy mark for the final value in the right form
EstimateRound input values sensibly first, then compute an approximate answerCriterion AMarks awarded for the rounding strategy shown, not just the final number
RoundApply a stated rounding rule (dp / sf / nearest unit) to a given valueCriterion AMark lost if you round to the wrong precision even when the digits are correct
Justify / AdviseState a conclusion AND give the reasoning that supports itCriterion DThe conclusion alone earns nothing — the reasoning sentence carries the mark
Show thatProve a given result using full, gap-free workingCriterion BNo marks for stating the given answer without the intermediate steps
DetermineFind the answer using an appropriate (often multi-step) method, method is not prescribedCriterion A/BAny valid method accepted provided it's shown explicitly

Key point

The single habit that protects the most marks in this whole strand: carry full calculator precision through every step, and round ONLY the value you're asked to report. Compare against thresholds, tolerances, and ranges using the unrounded value.
