Transformations

16 min readStandardCore strand of Form/Space and Shape — appears in most MYP Year 5 unit tests and on-screen eAssessment tasks, usually as short-answer coordinate/vector questions worth 1-3 marks each

Transformations questions look scary because of the notation, but every single one boils down to: take a point, apply a rule, get a new point. Master four coordinate rules and one vector-addition trick, and the ship-routes, drone-warehouses and logo-designers in these questions stop being different problems and become the same problem wearing a different costume.

Overview

A transformation takes a pre-image (the original point or shape) and produces an image (the transformed version, always marked with a prime — ). MYP Year 5 focuses on two big ideas: the four individual transformation types (translation, reflection, rotation, enlargement), and what happens when you chain two of them together — a combined transformation.

  • Translation, reflection and rotation are isometries — they never change size, only position or orientation.
  • Enlargement is the odd one out — it changes size by a scale factor , so the image is similar but not congruent (unless ).
  • Combining two translations is easy (just add the vectors); combining a reflection with a rotation is where order suddenly starts to matter.

Analyseidentify a pattern or relationship linking pre-image and image coordinatesAO3must state the rule/pattern found, not just list coordinate pairs
Explaingive reasons supported by mathematical justificationAO2a correct number with no reasoning sentence forfeits the explain mark

Key point

Every transformation question is really P′ = rule(P). Translation adds a vector; reflection, rotation and enlargement come from fixed coordinate formulas about the origin. Learn all four rules cold and you never need to re-derive anything under exam pressure.
