MYP Year 1 Sciences — Energy Forms and Transfer

22 min readFoundationalCore Year 1 physics strand — assessed through Criterion A (Knowing & Understanding) and Criterion C (Communicating) in unit tests and investigations, not a fixed exam percentage.

Every question on this topic is really testing one habit: can you track energy as it changes FORM and LOCATION without ever letting the total disappear? Ball falling, marble rolling, pendulum swinging, bulb glowing — same idea every time. Learn to name the energy store, show the conversion, and account for what's 'wasted', and you can answer almost anything examiners throw at you here.

Overview

Energy is the capacity to make something happen — to move an object, heat something up, or produce light or sound. It comes in different forms, it can move from one object to another, and it can change from one form into another. What it can NEVER do is appear from nowhere or vanish into nothing.

  • This unit has two big engines driving almost every question: the law of conservation of energy, and the idea of energy transfer/transformation between forms.
  • Heat transfer (conduction, convection, radiation) is really just a special case — three different mechanisms for moving thermal energy from hot to cold.
  • Resources and efficiency questions are the 'real-world' side: where does usable energy actually come from, and how much of it ends up doing the job we wanted?

Command terms this topic loves to test

Command termWhat it demandsAOMark-earning move
IdentifySelect or name the correct answer with no working or reasoning.Knowing & understanding1 mark for the correct word/arrow only — adding wrong reasoning after a correct identification can still cost the mark if it contradicts the answer.
StateGive a short factual answer, no explanation expected.Knowing & understanding1 mark for the key fact or term — extra detail isn't rewarded but a vague answer without the specific keyword loses it.
DescribeGive an accurate account of what happens, including the trend or pattern, but not WHY.CommunicatingNeeds a direction/quantity (e.g. 'increases from 12 to 24 cm') — 'it changes' alone earns 0 of the marks available.
ExplainGive reasons or a mechanism for why something happens.Applying & inquiringMust state the cause (e.g. 'because PE is transferred into KE') — repeating the description without the reason loses the explain mark.
CalculateObtain a numerical answer, showing the formula and substitution.ApplyingMarks awarded for formula, correct substitution, AND final answer with unit — a bare correct number with no working can still lose marks.
CompareState similarities and differences between two things.CommunicatingA one-sided answer (only differences, no similarity, or vice versa) typically scores half marks only.

Key point

Every energy question boils down to one idea: energy changes FORM or LOCATION, but the total never changes. If your answer doesn't say where the energy went, you haven't finished it.
