RevisionPrep FAQ
How Can Parents Help a Child with MYP Science?
Answered by RevisionPrep's IB Educators
You don't need to remember titration or Newton's laws to help here. The best support is structural: understanding the four assessment criteria, asking the right questions about a lab report, and knowing when a 4 or a 6 is actually fine. Here's what fifteen years of marking MYP science has taught me about where parents genuinely move the needle.
Understanding MYP Science & Grading
How can parents help a child with MYP Science?
Learn the four assessment criteria (A: Knowing and Understanding, B: Inquiring and Designing, C: Processing and Evaluating, D: Reflecting on Impacts), ask which one a task targets before your child starts, and check they've written a proper conclusion evaluating their data — not just described what happened. That single habit fixes most lost marks in Years 1-3.
Quick tip: before homework starts, ask "which criterion is this for?" A student who can name it usually understands what's actually being marked — one who can't is guessing, and guessing is where the marks disappear.
What are the MYP Science assessment criteria?
MYP Sciences uses four criteria, each marked out of 8: Criterion A (Knowing and Understanding), B (Inquiring and Designing), C (Processing and Evaluating), D (Reflecting on the Impacts of Science). According to the IB's MYP: From Principles into Practice guide, all four must be assessed at least twice per year in Years 1-3.
| Criterion | Focus | Typical task |
|---|---|---|
| A | Facts, concepts, applying them | Test, worksheet |
| B | Hypothesis, variables, method design | Planning a lab |
| C | Data, graphs, evaluating method | Lab write-up |
| D | Science and society/environment | Extended essay-style task |
What MYP grade is considered good in Science?
A 5 or 6 (out of 7) across the four criteria is a solid, genuinely competent result at MYP Years 1-3 — it shows the student can apply concepts and evaluate their own data reliably. A 7 demands consistently sophisticated, independent analysis, which is rare and not a fair year-one benchmark.
Grade boundaries are set per criterion strand out of 8, then totalled and converted to the 1-7 scale using IB grade descriptors — a 6 in Year 2 is a genuinely strong result, not a near-miss.
Does MYP Science affect my child's IB Diploma chances?
Not directly — MYP grades aren't reported to universities or carried into the Diploma Programme's final score. What MYP Science does build is the habit of writing a proper scientific evaluation and reading a data table, both of which the DP sciences (first exams 2025) assume you already know.
Think of Years 1-3 as building the muscle, not the transcript. A student who can't yet write "a source of error was..." in Year 2 will struggle with Internal Assessment evaluation sections in DP three years later.
Practical Ways to Support at Home
How do I help my child with MYP Science lab reports?
Ask them to explain their method out loud before writing it — if they can't say why they controlled a variable, they can't evaluate it properly on paper. Then check the conclusion links back to the original hypothesis and names at least one real limitation, not just "human error."
- Ask what the independent and dependent variables were.
- Check the data table has units and is labelled.
- Read the conclusion aloud — does it answer the original question?
- Look for one specific, named limitation (not "human error").
Common mistake: students write "we could improve accuracy by repeating the experiment" with no explanation of why — examiners want the specific source of error named.
My child says MYP Science is boring — what should I do?
Ask what unit they're on rather than the subject generally — "boring" often means "I don't understand this bit," not a genuine dislike of science. Connect it to something real: an ecosystem unit to a nature documentary, a chemistry unit to cooking. Disengagement in Years 1-3 is usually a comprehension gap, not a personality trait.
I've taught plenty of students who called Year 2 chemistry boring and then lit up in Year 4 when the same particle model reappeared with more context. Don't over-read a bored Tuesday as a fixed verdict on the subject.
How much science homework should an MYP student have?
There's no fixed IB hour count for MYP homework — it's set by each school. As a rough guide, Years 1-3 science tasks (worksheets, short write-ups) typically run 30-45 minutes a session, with longer investigation write-ups taking a session or two spread over a week.
If your child is regularly spending over an hour on a single worksheet, that's usually a sign of a comprehension gap, not laziness — worth flagging to the teacher rather than just pushing through.
What's the difference between MYP Sciences and Individuals and Societies?
Sciences (Biology, Chemistry, Physics content, integrated in Years 1-3) is assessed on the four criteria above — inquiry, data, evaluation. Individuals and Societies (history, geography) uses a different set of four criteria centred on investigating, formulating arguments, and communicating. Parents often mix up the write-up expectations between the two.
A common parent mistake: expecting an Individuals and Societies essay structure in a Sciences lab report. The two subjects genuinely reward different things — one wants argument and evidence, the other wants method and data.
Resources & Preparing for DP
What resources help with MYP Science at home?
Look for materials organised by MYP unit and criterion rather than generic textbooks — that's what actually maps to how the work is marked. RevisionPrep's Revision Notes and Topical Worksheets for MYP Sciences are built around the same four criteria your child's teacher marks against, so practice matches the real task.
Checklist before buying anything:
- Is it organised by criterion (A-D), not just by topic?
- Does it show worked examples of a full evaluation, not just facts?
- Is it current for the 2025 DP Sciences transition, if your child's near Year 4-5?
Do I need a tutor for MYP Science?
Usually not — most MYP Years 1-3 struggles come down to not understanding what a criterion is asking for, which structured self-study resources fix faster than extra teaching hours. A student who reviews model answers and practises against the actual criteria language tends to close the gap within a term.
Before spending on anything extra, check whether the gap is content (they don't know the facts) or command-term (they don't understand what "evaluate" or "outline" is asking for). The second is far more common in Years 1-3 and is fixed with practice, not more teaching hours.
How does MYP Science prepare my child for DP Sciences?
MYP Criterion C (Processing and Evaluating) is the direct ancestor of DP Internal Assessment skills — writing a hypothesis, identifying variables, evaluating limitations. According to the IB, DP Sciences guides (Biology, Chemistry, Physics) had first exams in 2025, and all now weight practical investigation skills heavily in the IA.
A student who's genuinely comfortable naming a limitation and suggesting a realistic improvement by MYP Year 3 walks into DP Year 4 sciences with a real head start on the IA — that skill doesn't appear from nowhere at 16.
MYP Science Grade Bands (Years 1-3)
| Grade (1-7) | What it typically shows |
| 1-2 | Limited understanding, incomplete tasks |
| 3-4 | Basic application, developing evaluation |
| 5-6 | Solid, consistent understanding and evaluation |
| 7 | Sophisticated, independent analysis across criteria |
