How Are the IB Biology Exam Papers Structured?

IB Biology has three papers. Paper 1 is multiple choice with data-based questions (SL 30, HL 40). Paper 2 has short-answer and extended-response questions on core (and, for HL, additional higher level) material. Paper 3 tests the options plus data analysis and experimental skills, using structured questions.

HL papers are longer and cover extra content — the whole syllabus, not just the SL subset, plus deeper Additional Higher Level (AHL) topics like plant biology and further genetics. HL Paper 1 has 40 questions in 60 minutes versus SL's 30 in 45; HL Papers 2 and 3 run longer too.

At SL, total exam time across all three papers is roughly three hours; at HL it's closer to four and a half hours. Paper 1 is shortest (45–60 minutes), Paper 2 is the longest single paper, and Paper 3 sits in between, testing options and data-handling skills.

Paper 1 and Paper 2 draw from the core syllabus themes — from molecular biology through to ecology and evolution — with HL adding AHL content. Paper 3 examines whichever option your school teaches (such as Neurobiology and behaviour, or Biotechnology and bioinformatics) plus general data analysis and experimental design skills.

Paper 1 counts for 20% of the final grade at both SL and HL. Paper 2 is worth 40% at SL and 36% at HL. Paper 3 is worth 20% at SL and 24% at HL. The remaining 20% at both levels comes from the internal assessment.

Grade boundaries move every exam session because the IB uses statistical grading, not fixed percentages. As a rough guide from recent sessions, a grade 7 in HL Biology has often needed around 78-82% of total marks, and a grade 4 (the pass mark most universities look for as a baseline) has sat near 45-50%.

The IA is a single scientific investigation marked out of 24 against three criteria: Research design, Data analysis, and Conclusion and evaluation, each worth up to 6 marks, with the Personal engagement criterion also assessed as part of the overall investigation quality. It counts for 20% of the final grade at both SL and HL.

Command terms range from lower-order verbs like 'state', 'identify' and 'label' in Paper 1-style short questions, up to higher-order terms like 'explain', 'compare and contrast', 'evaluate' and 'to what extent' in Paper 2's extended response and Paper 3's structured questions.

Pick the essay question you can structure clearly, not just the topic you know best — Paper 2 Section B rewards organisation as much as content. Use short paragraphs, one idea each, include named examples (a specific enzyme, organism, or process) and address every part of a multi-part question directly.

Paper 3's Section A gives you a dataset, graph or experimental scenario you haven't seen before, and asks you to identify trends, calculate values (like percentage change or rate), evaluate methodology, and suggest improvements — testing skills rather than memorised content.

Choose HL if you're aiming at a biology-heavy university course (medicine, biomedical science, biology) or you enjoy the extra AHL depth on genetics, plant biology and further ecology. SL suits students who want strong biology grounding without the additional content load and longer exam papers.

A-Level Biology (in England) is typically assessed through three written papers at the end of two years, similar in spirit to IB, but without an internally-assessed practical component counting towards the final grade — practical skills are reported separately. IB's internal assessment (20% of the grade) is a key structural difference parents should know.
