IB Economics Exam Papers Explained

Answered by RevisionPrep's IB Educators

Economics is one of the few DP subjects where SL and HL students sit genuinely different papers, not just extra questions bolted on. I've marked these papers for years — here's exactly how Paper 1, 2 and 3 work, what each is worth, and where students actually lose marks.

Exam & Syllabus Structure

How are the IB Economics exam papers structured?

SL students sit Paper 1 (extended response, one micro and one macro essay from a choice) and Paper 2 (data response using real-world stimulus). HL students sit both of those plus Paper 3, a quantitative paper testing calculations across all four syllabus units. According to the IB, the current Economics guide had first assessment in 2022 and remains the basis for exams through 2025 and beyond.

Quick breakdown:

  1. Paper 1 — two essays, one from micro, one from macro (choice of topic)
  2. Paper 2 — data response question using a real article/statistics extract
  3. Paper 3 (HL only) — structured quantitative questions covering all four units

What is the weighting of each IB Economics paper?

At SL, Paper 1 is worth 40% and Paper 2 is worth 60% of the final grade — no internal assessment weighting change there since IA counts separately. At HL, Paper 1 drops to 20%, Paper 2 is 30%, and Paper 3 makes up 30%, with the internal assessment contributing the remaining 20% at both levels.

LevelPaper 1Paper 2Paper 3Internal Assessment
SL40%60%—20% (of total, separate weighting)
HL20%30%30%20%

Note the SL row totals external assessment only — the IA sits alongside at 20% of the overall DP grade for both levels.

What command terms come up most in IB Economics exams?

Examiners lean hardest on "explain", "evaluate" and "examine" — each demanding a different depth of response. "Explain" wants a clear causal chain with a diagram; "evaluate" wants weighed judgement with a reasoned conclusion; "examine" sits between the two, asking for analysis without necessarily a final verdict.

Common mistake: students write an "explain" answer when the question says "evaluate" — you'll lose marks on the Paper 1 markscheme's evaluation criterion even if your economics is correct, because the examiner is specifically checking for a counter-argument and a conclusion.

How long is each IB Economics exam paper?

Paper 1 runs 1 hour 15 minutes at SL and HL. Paper 2 is 1 hour 45 minutes at SL and HL. Paper 3, HL only, runs 1 hour 45 minutes. Total exam time is 3 hours at SL and 4 hours 45 minutes at HL across the three sittings.

How To Prepare & Get A 7

How do I get a 7 in IB Economics?

The students who consistently hit 7s treat diagrams as arguments, not decoration — every diagram is fully labelled, correctly shifted, and referenced explicitly in the prose. Beyond that, it's real-world evidence (named country, actual data, dated example) woven into evaluation, not bolted on as an afterthought in the last sentence.

Three habits I see in every 7:

  1. They define key terms in the first sentence, not buried mid-paragraph
  2. Every diagram has a title, labelled axes, and is referred back to by name in the text
  3. Their evaluation paragraph considers a specific stakeholder or timeframe, not just "it depends"

How is IB Economics Paper 3 marked?

Paper 3 is marked on accuracy of calculation and clarity of working, not just the final number. Most sub-questions award marks in stages — for example a tax-incidence question might give one mark for the correct formula, one for substitution, one for the final figure with correct units.

Worked example (consumer surplus after a subsidy): Given demand Qd = 100 − 2P and a subsidy of USD 4 per unit shifting supply, students must: (1) find new equilibrium price/quantity, (2) recalculate consumer surplus using ½ × base × height, (3) state the answer with correct units (e.g. "USD 450"). Markschemes typically allocate 1 mark per correct step even if the final answer is wrong — so showing working matters more here than in Paper 1 or 2.

What real-world examples should I use in IB Economics essays?

Examiners want specific, dated, named examples — not "a country" or "in the past". Something like "Sri Lanka's 2022 debt default" or "the UK's 2023 energy price cap" shows genuine engagement and hits the application/evaluation criteria far more reliably than a generic textbook scenario.

Quick tip: keep a running list of 8-10 real examples across inflation, unemployment, trade and market failure as you go through the year — reusing a well-chosen example across multiple essays is completely fine and actually strengthens your evaluation.

How should I structure a Paper 1 essay?

IB Economics Paper 1 essays follow a fairly fixed shape: define key terms, draw and explain a diagram, apply it to the stimulus context, then evaluate with a real limitation or counter-argument. Part (a) is worth 10 marks for pure explanation; part (b) is worth 15 marks and specifically rewards evaluation.

  1. Define the key economic term(s) from the question
  2. Draw and fully label the relevant diagram
  3. Explain the diagram's mechanism step by step, referring back to it by name
  4. Apply the theory directly to the context given in the question
  5. Evaluate — a real limitation, a stakeholder trade-off, or a time-based qualifier

Difficulty, Grades & Content

Is IB Economics HL much harder than SL?

HL Economics is genuinely harder, not just longer — the extra Paper 3 demands comfort with algebra, calculations and quantitative techniques that SL students never see on exam day. The HL-only content (like the Keynesian multiplier calculations and elasticity numericals) also gets tested in more depth across Papers 1 and 2.

If your child finds economics interesting but isn't confident with numbers, SL is a genuinely sound choice — it isn't a "lesser" option, and universities generally care more about the overall diploma score than whether Economics specifically was taken at HL.

What topics are covered in IB Economics Paper 2?

Paper 2 draws from macroeconomics and the global economy unit — international trade, exchange rates, balance of payments, and economic development. Students respond to a real data extract (often a news article with statistics) and answer a mix of definition, calculation, explanation and evaluation questions on it.

Common mistake: students describe the data extract back to the examiner instead of using it as evidence for an argument — always quote a specific figure from the stimulus and explain what it shows economically, don't just restate it.

Do universities care whether I took Economics SL or HL?

Most university admissions teams care far more about your child's overall IB Diploma score and any specific subject/grade prerequisites than whether Economics was SL or HL. Exceptions exist — some UK economics or PPE-style degrees prefer HL Maths and HL Economics together — so it's worth checking specific course requirements directly.

If a target degree lists no explicit HL requirement, SL Economics with a strong grade is rarely a disadvantage compared to a weaker HL grade.

Resources & Support

What resources actually help with IB Economics revision?

Past papers marked against the official markscheme teach exam technique faster than any textbook chapter — students should aim to work through several full Paper 1 and Paper 2 sets before mocks. Topical worksheets that isolate one diagram or one calculation type at a time are far more efficient than re-reading notes.

On RevisionPrep, students can work through topical worksheets by unit, full mock papers under timed conditions, and concise revision notes that map directly onto the current Economics guide's four units — useful for spotting exactly where a diagram or definition is shaky before the real exam.

How much does IB Economics tutoring or extra help typically cost?

Costs vary hugely by region and provider, and there's no single standard figure worth quoting as fact. Many families find that structured self-study resources — worksheets, mock papers and revision notes aligned to the current syllabus — cover most of what's needed without ongoing costs, especially once a student knows their specific weak topics.

Before paying for anything extra, it's worth having your child sit one full timed past paper first — the mistakes it reveals (weak diagrams, missed evaluation, rushed Paper 3 calculations) tell you exactly what kind of help is actually needed, rather than guessing.
