IB Maths AA vs AI: Which Should You Choose?

Answered by RevisionPrep's IB Educators

Every DP student hits this fork in the road, usually in Year 12. Choose Analysis & Approaches (AA) if you like proof and algebra; choose Applications & Interpretation (AI) if you'd rather work with real data and a GDC. Here's how to decide properly, not by guessing.

AA vs AI: The Core Difference

Should I take IB Maths AA or AI?

Choose AA if you enjoy pure algebra, proof and calculus by hand and you're aiming at engineering, physics or maths-heavy degrees. Choose AI if you prefer applied, technology-driven problems (statistics, modelling, finance) and want a gentler route through calculus. Neither is officially "easier" — they test different skills entirely.

Ask yourself three honest questions:

  1. Do I reach for algebra or a calculator first when stuck?
  2. Am I heading toward a degree that lists a maths prerequisite (engineering, economics, physics)?
  3. Did I actually enjoy MYP/IGCSE algebra, or did I tolerate it?

According to the IB, both courses share roughly 60% common content in the current guide (first exams 2021, still current for 2025 cohorts) — the split is really about depth of algebraic manipulation versus technology-based modelling.

What's the actual difference between AA and AI content?

AA has more pure calculus, algebraic proof, complex numbers (HL) and trigonometric identities done by hand. AI leans into statistics, financial maths, modelling with technology, and voronoi diagrams (HL only). Both cover functions, sequences, probability and vectors, but AA expects manual derivation; AI expects GDC and spreadsheet fluency.

Is IB Maths AI a joke or seen as easier by universities?

No — that's a myth worth killing early. AI SL and HL are recognised IB Diploma maths courses with their own assessment objectives and grade boundaries; universities that require "Mathematics" for entry generally accept either, though STEM courses often specify AA. Check the specific university's entry requirements rather than trusting rumour.

Quick tip: if you're aiming at a UK Russell Group engineering or physics degree, check the course page directly — several explicitly ask for Maths AA HL, not just "IB Maths". Economics and business degrees are usually more flexible on AA vs AI.

Difficulty & Grades

Is AA harder than AI?

AA is generally considered more demanding for students who find algebra and abstract proof difficult, because it pushes calculus and functions further without a GDC to lean on. AI is harder for students who struggle with open-ended modelling and interpreting messy real-world data. "Harder" depends entirely on which skill set is weaker for you.

In fifteen years of teaching both, the students who struggle most in AA are the ones who never got comfortable manipulating algebra without a calculator at IGCSE. The students who struggle in AI are usually strong at mechanical algebra but freeze when a question gives them a real dataset and asks them to justify a modelling choice in words.

Is it harder to get a 7 in AA or AI?

Grade boundaries shift year to year and by session, so there's no fixed answer — but AA HL typically has a slightly wider boundary for the top grades because the paper rewards precise algebraic technique consistently. AI's Paper 3 (HL only) rewards sustained modelling, which some students find more forgiving under exam pressure.

Common mistake: students pick AI assuming a 7 is easier to reach, then lose marks in the extended-response questions because they can't clearly justify a statistical or modelling choice in full sentences — a skill AA rarely tests as heavily.

Can I switch from AA to AI (or vice versa) partway through the DP?

Yes, most schools allow a switch in the first term or two of Year 12 before content diverges too far, but it gets harder after that because AI introduces statistics and modelling topics AA never covers, and AA moves faster into calculus AI doesn't require. Talk to your maths teacher and DP coordinator immediately if you're doubting your choice.

3 things to check before requesting a switch:

  1. How far into calculus/statistics has each class progressed?
  2. Will your school let you sit catch-up sessions or self-study the gap using Revision Notes and Topical Worksheets?
  3. Is the deadline for subject changes with your DP coordinator still open?

SL vs HL Within Each Course

Should I take AA SL or AA HL?

Take AA HL only if you're confident with algebra, enjoy calculus, and need it for a STEM degree (engineering, physics, actuarial science) — the jump in pace and abstraction from SL is significant. AA SL suits students who want strong maths for university without committing to the heaviest DP course combination.

According to the IB's Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches guide, HL adds an entire extra topic depth in calculus and introduces proof by induction, complex numbers and further vectors — content SL students never see at all, not just a lighter version of it.

Should I take AI SL or AI HL?

Take AI HL if you want to keep options open for economics, social sciences or business degrees that value strong statistics and modelling, or if you enjoy applied problem-solving with technology. AI SL is a solid, accessible choice for humanities-focused students who still need Maths for university entry.

AI HL adds Paper 3, a single extended investigation-style paper built around one real-world context — this rewards students who write clearly under exam conditions, not just those who calculate fast.

Do I need HL maths for medicine, engineering or economics?

Engineering courses in the UK and most STEM degrees typically require Maths AA HL specifically. Medicine usually asks for Maths at SL level (AA or AI accepted by many universities, though some prefer AA). Economics degrees vary hugely — some Russell Group courses want AA HL, others accept AI SL. Always check the specific course page.

Degree targetTypical requirement
Engineering (UK)AA HL
MedicineSL (AA or AI, check each uni)
Economics (competitive)AA SL/HL preferred
Business/ManagementAI or AA SL usually fine
PhysicsAA HL

Choosing, Cost & Support

How do I decide between AA and AI if I'm not sure what I want to study yet?

If your future degree is unknown, lean toward AA SL — it keeps STEM and social-science doors open, since more universities list AA as the default "Mathematics" requirement. Only choose AI if you already know you'll avoid maths-heavy degrees, or if you've genuinely struggled with algebra since IGCSE/MYP.

Quick tip: talk to your school's careers counsellor before locking in your subject choices — a five-minute conversation in Year 11 can save you a difficult switch request in Year 12.

How can my child prepare over the summer before starting AA or AI?

The most useful summer prep is consolidating algebra fluency (indices, factorising, solving equations) for AA, or GDC/spreadsheet confidence and basic statistics for AI — not racing ahead into DP content. A few hours a week with topic-based practice questions builds far more confidence than a rushed textbook read-through in August.

On RevisionPrep, students preparing for either course can work through Topical Worksheets on algebra and functions before term starts, which covers the shared foundation both AA and AI build on in the first term.

What resources actually help for AA or AI exam prep?

Past paper practice under timed conditions matters more than any textbook chapter for both courses, alongside clear topic notes and worked mark-scheme walkthroughs so you understand exactly how marks are awarded. Mixing subject-specific worksheets with full mock papers closer to exams builds both accuracy and exam stamina.

A realistic revision cycle in the final two terms: topic worksheets to fix gaps, then timed past papers by unit, then full mock papers under real exam conditions — checked against the actual IB mark scheme, not just the final answer.
