RevisionPrep FAQ

Is IB Maths HL Worth Taking?

Answered by RevisionPrep's IB Educators

Short answer: yes, if you're heading toward engineering, physics, economics with heavy quant modules, or pure maths — but not just to pad your resume. I've taught both HL strands for years, and the students who thrive are the ones who already enjoy the SL content, not the ones taking it for prestige.

Difficulty & Grades

Is IB Maths HL worth taking?

Worth it if you're aiming at engineering, physics, computer science or a maths-heavy economics degree — HL is genuinely respected by admissions tutors. Not worth it purely for a stronger-looking transcript; the extra 90 teaching hours and Paper 3 problem-solving demands mean a weak HL grade often hurts more than a strong SL one helps.

Quick tip: if you're unsure, ask what grade you're realistically pulling in Y11/pre-DP maths tests without much revision. Comfortably above an A grade equivalent, with genuine interest in why a method works rather than just how — that's the signal to go HL.

How hard is IB Maths HL compared to SL?

Maths HL is harder in three specific ways: more content (calculus goes deeper, complex numbers and further vectors are added), a third exam paper testing unseen problem-solving, and 240 recommended teaching hours against SL's 150. The jump isn't linear — HL feels roughly one and a half times more demanding, not just 60% more content.

The content students underestimate most: Paper 3 (HL only) gives you two extended, structured problems worth 20% of the final grade, often blending three or four topics in one question. Students who only drill topic-by-topic questions get caught out here — you need practice stitching topics together.

What grades do students typically get in Maths HL?

Maths AA HL has historically produced some of the lower average grades among DP subjects, while Maths AI HL tends to sit slightly higher — reflecting AA HL's heavier pure-maths demands. A 6 or 7 in AA HL is genuinely respected by university admissions teams precisely because the cohort average is tougher to clear.

This is exactly why a strong HL grade carries weight in offers for competitive courses — admissions tutors know the subject's difficulty profile and read a 6 in AA HL differently to a 6 in an easier elective.

How to Study & Get a 7

How do I get a 7 in IB Maths HL?

A 7 comes from past-paper volume plus targeted weakness-hunting, not more textbook reading. Work through at least eight to ten complete past papers under timed conditions, mark them against the official IB markscheme, then rebuild every topic where you dropped more than two marks. Paper 3 technique — reading the question twice before writing — matters as much as content knowledge.

A process that consistently works with my students:

  1. Sit a full past paper under real time pressure (no notes, phone away).
  2. Mark it strictly against the markscheme, noting why each mark was lost — method, accuracy, or misread command term.
  3. Rebuild the weakest topic using Revision Notes and a topic-specific worksheet before moving on.
  4. Repeat with a different past paper the following week, tracking whether the same error type recurs.

Worked example: a student loses 3 marks on a differential equations question in Paper 2 not because they can't integrate, but because they forget the constant of integration and misapply initial conditions — a method-mark loss, not a knowledge gap. Spotting that pattern across three papers tells you exactly what to fix.

What's the biggest mistake students make in Maths HL exams?

Rushing straight into calculation without unpacking what the question is actually asking — especially on Paper 3, where questions build across several sub-parts. Examiners award method marks generously if working is shown, but a student who jumps to an answer with no working can lose marks even when the final number is correct.

Common mistake: skipping the command term. "Show that" requires you to demonstrate the given result explicitly, working forward from the information given — not just state it and move on, even if you already know the answer is correct.

Exam & Syllabus

What's the difference between Maths AA HL and Maths AI HL?

AA HL (Analysis and Approaches) is proof-based and calculus-heavy, built for students heading into pure maths, physics or engineering. AI HL (Applications and Interpretation) is technology- and modelling-based, allowing a calculator throughout, and suits students aiming at economics, biology, psychology or business degrees where statistical modelling matters more than algebraic proof.

According to the IB's Mathematics guides, both courses share the same 240 recommended teaching hours at HL and both include a Paper 3 problem-solving paper worth 20% of the grade — the difference is content emphasis and calculator access, not overall workload.

How many papers does Maths HL have and what's on them?

Maths HL has three papers. Paper 1 (AA only, no calculator) and Paper 2 (calculator allowed) each run two hours and cover the full syllabus; Paper 3, sat only by HL students, is one hour and tests extended problem-solving across two structured questions. Together they're worth 100% of the final HL grade alongside the internally assessed Exploration.

PaperLengthCalculatorWeighting
Paper 12 hrsNo (AA) / Yes (AI)30%
Paper 22 hrsYes30%
Paper 31 hrYes20%
Exploration (IA)~12 hrs work—20%

Do I need Maths HL for the IB Diploma core requirements?

No — the Diploma core (Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and CAS) doesn't require any specific Maths level. Every DP student must take a Maths course, but SL is entirely acceptable for the Diploma itself; HL is only necessary if your target degree or university specifically asks for it.

According to the IB, Mathematics is one of the six subject groups every diploma candidate must study, but the level (SL vs HL) is a personal and university-driven choice, not a core requirement.

Comparisons & University Choices

Do universities require IB Maths HL for STEM degrees?

Many top engineering, physics and pure maths degrees do specify Maths AA HL, sometimes naming a minimum grade like a 6 or 7. Economics, computer science and some medicine offers will often accept AI HL or even AA SL instead — it genuinely varies by university and by course, so always check the specific programme's entry requirements directly.

Quick tip for parents: don't rely on general subject guidance from a school prospectus — check the actual course page on the university's own admissions site, since requirements differ between, say, a straight Mathematics degree and a joint Economics and Maths degree at the same institution.

Should my child take Maths AA HL or Maths AI HL?

It depends on the intended degree, not on which sounds more prestigious. AA HL suits a clear STEM or pure-maths direction; AI HL suits economics, biology, psychology, business or any field leaning on statistics and modelling with calculator support throughout. Choosing AA HL for a non-STEM degree usually just adds unnecessary strain.

Is IB Maths HL harder than A-Level Further Maths?

They're difficult to compare directly because they're structured differently — A-Level Further Maths is a separate qualification stacked on top of Maths A-Level, while IB Maths HL is one integrated course within the Diploma's six subjects. Content overlaps heavily with calculus and complex numbers, but HL students juggle it alongside five other subjects and the Diploma core simultaneously.

That workload difference — HL maths plus five other subjects plus the Extended Essay, TOK and CAS — is usually the bigger factor in how hard a student's overall year feels, not the raw content difficulty of one subject in isolation.

Resources & Cost

What resources help most for self-study in Maths HL?

Past papers marked strictly against the official markscheme are the single most useful resource, followed by topic-specific worksheets to patch identified gaps and concise revision notes for quick pre-exam review. Random YouTube tutorials can help explain a stuck concept, but they rarely replace the discipline of timed, marked practice under exam conditions.

On RevisionPrep, the DP Mathematics section pairs topic-by-topic Revision Notes with Topical Worksheets and full Mock Papers — useful for exactly the rebuild-the-weak-topic cycle described above.

Is it worth paying for extra Maths HL resources?

Official IB past papers and markschemes are the essential baseline and are inexpensive to access through school or the IB store directly. Paid revision platforms add value mainly through organisation — pre-sorted topical practice and mock papers save hours of a student's own prep time, which matters most in the final two terms before exams.

Before paying for anything extra, check three things: does your child already have every past paper for their exact syllabus session; are they marking their own work against the real markscheme rather than guessing; and is the gap a content gap or a technique gap (timing, command terms) — paid resources solve the first far better than the third.
