Is IB Physics HL Worth Taking? Difficulty, Grades and the Honest Verdict

Answered by RevisionPrep's IB Educators

Answered by RevisionPrep's IB Educators. Physics HL has a reputation as one of the toughest choices on the IB Diploma, and it's largely earned — calculus-level maths, dense content, and a gruelling Paper 3. Whether it's worth it for you, or your child, depends entirely on what comes after the Diploma. Here's the honest answer.

Difficulty & Grades

Is IB Physics HL worth taking?

Yes — but only if you need it. Physics HL earns its place for engineering, physics or quantitative STEM degrees, where universities expect it. It's genuinely one of the toughest HL subjects, with a demanding Paper 3 and extra depth in every theme. If STEM isn't the plan, SL usually serves you just as well.

Quick tip: ask yourself one question before choosing — does my target degree list Physics as a required or recommended subject? If yes, HL is worth the workload. If you're unsure, SL Physics still counts as a Group 4 science and won't close STEM doors at most universities, just some of the most competitive engineering courses.

How hard is IB Physics HL compared to other HL subjects?

Physics HL sits with Chemistry HL and Maths AA HL as one of the three hardest DP subjects, combining conceptual difficulty with heavy maths — vectors, calculus-based mechanics, and multi-step Paper 3 data analysis. It's rarely the highest-scoring HL for students who aren't already strong at maths, though it's very learnable with the right practice routine.

What makes it harder than, say, Biology HL isn't memory load — it's that every topic assumes fluent algebra and graph-reading. Students who struggle usually aren't struggling with physics concepts; they're struggling with the maths underneath them.

What are the current grade boundaries for IB Physics HL?

Grade boundaries shift each exam session because the IB sets them statistically after marking, not in advance. Recent sessions have needed roughly 78-82% of raw marks for a 7 in Physics HL and around 45-50% for a 4 — tighter than many humanities HLs, reflecting how demanding the papers are.

Because boundaries move, don't chase last year's exact number in your revision. Aim to consistently score above 80% in timed past-paper conditions across Papers 1, 2 and 3 — that buffer protects you even in a harder-than-usual session.

Is IB Physics HL harder than SL?

Yes — HL Physics is harder than SL, not just longer. HL sits three papers like SL, but each one runs longer and reaches deeper into every syllabus theme, especially Fields and Nuclear and quantum physics, and Paper 3 demands more sustained data analysis. The content overlap is real, but HL adds genuine extra depth.

According to the IB, HL Physics allocates 240 recommended teaching hours against SL's 150 — that's not padding, it's 90 extra hours of content your teacher has to fit somewhere, usually in the harder AHL-only subtopics.

How to Study & Get a 7

How do I get a 7 in IB Physics HL?

A 7 comes from mastering the maths as much as the physics — most students lose marks on unit errors, significant figures, and graph analysis, not conceptual misunderstanding. Past papers matter more than notes here: work through at least five years of Paper 2 and Paper 3 past papers under timed conditions before your mocks.

Five things I tell every HL Physics student aiming for a 7:

  1. Know the formula booklet cold before you sit down — don't waste exam minutes hunting for an equation.
  2. Drill data-based questions weekly; Paper 3 rewards fluency with uncertainty and gradients far more than raw recall.
  3. Redo every mock mistake within 48 hours and label it — maths error, units error, or genuine concept gap.
  4. Learn the command terms properly. "Derive" and "show that" need full working; "state" doesn't. Mixing these up costs marks every session.
  5. Time Paper 1 like a race — HL gives roughly 90 seconds per question, so practise at that pace, not slower.

How should I prepare for IB Physics Paper 3?

Paper 3 is the paper HL students most underrate — it's a meaningful chunk of your final mark and tests data-based analysis and practical-scheme questions across every syllabus theme, not just your favourite topic. Practising uncertainty propagation, gradient calculations, and justifying trend lines is the single highest-yield revision activity for this paper.

Worked example: if a graph gives a gradient of 9.8 ± 0.3 m/s², the percentage uncertainty is (0.3 ÷ 9.8) × 100 = 3.1%. Examiners consistently award the mark for showing this calculation explicitly — quoting only the final uncertainty without the working is a mistake I see almost every cohort make.

How many hours a week should I study for Physics HL?

Most students landing a 6 or 7 put in 4-6 hours of dedicated Physics HL revision a week outside class, rising to 8-10 hours in the two months before finals. Physics rewards spaced, active problem-solving far more than reading notes, so protect at least two of those weekly hours specifically for past-paper questions.

Exam & Syllabus

What extra topics does IB Physics HL cover that SL doesn't?

HL doesn't get separate topics — both SL and HL study the same five themes: Space, time and motion; The particulate nature of matter; Wave behaviour; Fields; and Nuclear and quantum physics. HL simply goes deeper into each one, covering content like more complex fields applications and extended nuclear physics that SL skips entirely.

There's no longer an "options" unit at all — every student, SL or HL, now studies the same core framework, just to different depths within each theme.

Does IB Physics HL have a different IA to SL?

No — the Physics Internal Assessment is identical in structure for SL and HL: one individual investigation, roughly 10 hours of student work, marked out of 24 against the same five criteria (Personal Engagement, Exploration, Analysis, Evaluation, Communication). HL students often pick more mathematically demanding investigations, but the IB doesn't require it.

When did the current IB Physics syllabus start, and what changed?

According to the IB, the current Physics guide had first teaching in 2023 and first exams in 2025, replacing the old option-based syllabus with a single unified framework of five themes shared by SL and HL. The biggest change: no more optional topics like Astrophysics — every student studies the same core content now, just at different depths.

Comparisons & University Choices

Should I take Physics HL or Chemistry HL for engineering?

For most engineering degrees, Physics HL is the safer pick — it's explicitly listed as required or strongly recommended by more engineering programmes than Chemistry HL, especially for mechanical, electrical and civil engineering. Chemistry HL matters more for chemical or materials engineering specifically. Always check your target course's own subject requirements rather than assuming.

Do universities require IB Physics HL for engineering or physics degrees?

Many competitive engineering and physics degree programmes — including several Russell Group universities in the UK and STEM-focused scholarship schemes elsewhere — list Physics HL as required or strongly preferred alongside Maths AA HL. Requirements vary widely by country and institution, so check the specific programme's entry profile rather than assuming SL is enough.

Is IB Physics HL worth it if I'm not doing STEM at university?

Probably not, unless you genuinely enjoy it or have a specific reason for a sixth demanding HL. Physics HL takes real time away from subjects that would actually move your predicted grades and applications if you're heading into humanities, business or social sciences. SL Physics, or a different HL entirely, usually serves non-STEM students better.

Resources & Cost (Parent Questions)

What resources actually help students improve in Physics HL?

Past papers beat almost every other resource for Physics HL — a topic-organised set of practice questions moves the needle more than re-reading a textbook ever will. Pair that with concise revision notes for fast formula and definition recall, and a full mock paper sat under strict timed conditions every few weeks before finals.

Three things to check before your next mock:

  1. Have you attempted at least three real past Paper 3s under timed conditions?
  2. Can you derive, not just recite, the SHM and circular motion equations?
  3. Do you know your personal three weakest topics from your last mock's marks breakdown?

Is it worth paying for extra Physics HL revision resources?

It depends on what's actually failing. If your child understands the concepts but loses marks on structure and exam technique, worked past papers and topical practice questions are worth the modest cost. If whole topics are missing, dedicated topic notes and worksheets are the better investment before spending on mock exam packs alone.
