How Is MYP Biology Graded From the Criteria to a 1–7?

Your teacher assesses four criteria (A, B, C, D), each scored out of 8 using task-specific rubrics called achievement level descriptors. The four scores are added for a total out of 32, then converted to a 1–7 grade using the IB's published MYP grade-boundary table — the same conversion process used across every MYP subject.

MYP Sciences (Biology included) has four criteria: A — Knowing and understanding, B — Inquiring and designing, C — Processing and evaluating, D — Reflecting on the impacts of science. A 5 or above suggests solid readiness for DP Biology; a 6 or 7 means the jump to Standard Level or Higher Level should feel manageable rather than overwhelming. Below a 4, I'd want to see the underlying gaps addressed — usually in Criterion A content knowledge or Criterion C data analysis — before committing to HL.

Start by identifying which specific criterion is holding you back — most students plateau on Criterion B (designing investigations) or D (evaluating impacts), not A. Then target that criterion's exact command terms and rubric strands directly, rather than just studying content harder across the board.

Criterion C (Processing and evaluating) asks you to handle data — process results, identify trends, evaluate the method's validity. Criterion D (Reflecting on the impacts of science) asks you to discuss how biology affects society, ethics or the environment. Students often confuse them by writing societal comments inside a data-analysis task, which loses marks on both.

Criterion A is marked through tests, structured questions and application tasks that check whether you can recall biological facts, explain concepts, and apply understanding to unfamiliar situations. The top band (7–8) specifically requires applying knowledge to new, unfamiliar contexts — not just reproducing what was taught in class.

Most schools don't set a hard MYP grade cutoff for DP Biology, but they use it as one input alongside teacher recommendation when advising SL versus HL. A consistent 6–7 in MYP Biology usually supports an HL recommendation; a 3–4 often prompts a conversation about SL or a different DP science instead.
