RevisionPrep FAQ
IB Maths SL vs HL: Which Should You Take?
Answered by RevisionPrep's IB Educators
Every November and every May, students ask me this in almost the same words: SL or HL? There's no single right answer — it depends on your target degree, your grades in Year 11/pre-DP maths, and how much you actually enjoy the subject. Here's how I'd actually help you decide.
Difficulty & Grades
Should I take IB Maths at SL or HL?
Take HL only if you need it for a specific degree (engineering, physics, actuarial science, most economics at top universities) or you're genuinely strong at maths and enjoy problem-solving under pressure. If maths is a means to an end, AA SL or AI SL will serve you better and protect your overall grade.
Ask yourself three things:
- Does my target course explicitly require or strongly prefer HL Maths?
- Am I scoring comfortably above 80% in current maths assessments?
- Would the extra HL hours be better spent on my HL subjects that actually count more for university offers? If you answer no to any of the first two, SL is usually the safer call.
Is IB Maths HL harder than SL?
Yes — HL is genuinely harder, not just longer. HL covers extra calculus, series and proof-based content beyond SL, with three papers instead of two, and Paper 3 demands sustained problem-solving across unfamiliar contexts rather than routine questions. Most teachers report HL takes noticeably more weekly study time than SL.
According to the IB, first exams for the current Mathematics: analysis and approaches (AA) and Mathematics: applications and interpretation (AI) guides were May 2021, with both still offered at SL and HL. HL adds the 'Topic 9: option' unit (not present at SL in AA) plus Paper 3, a 60-mark extended problem-solving paper based on the whole syllabus.
What percentage of students get a 7 in Maths HL vs SL?
Grade 7 rates for Maths HL are typically lower in raw percentage terms than SL, largely because HL cohorts are smaller and self-selected for ability — but the grade boundaries are also set higher, meaning a 7 genuinely reflects harder content mastered. Exact statistics vary by exam session and subject (AA vs AI).
Don't chase a 7 rate published somewhere online — chase your own trend. If your Paper 1 (no calculator) scores have been climbing across your mocks, HL 7 is realistic. If Paper 1 is where you consistently lose marks on algebraic manipulation, SL is the more reliable path to a strong grade.
How to Study & Decide
How do I decide between Maths AA and AI?
Choose Analysis & Approaches (AA) if you enjoy pure algebraic proof and want pathways into engineering, physics or maths-heavy degrees. Choose Applications & Interpretation (AI) if you prefer technology-driven, real-world modelling — statistics, finance, discrete maths — and want a course that leans on GDC and software use throughout.
Quick tip: try past-paper Section A questions from both AA SL and AI SL under time pressure before you commit. AA rewards clean algebraic manipulation without a calculator on Paper 1; AI leans on calculator use and contextual modelling across every paper. Your gut reaction to 15 minutes of each is more diagnostic than any subject description.
Can I switch from HL to SL Maths during the IB?
Yes, in most schools — but only within the window your Diploma Coordinator sets, usually before the end of Year 1 or the start of Year 2, since HL and SL share the first-year syllabus content. After that deadline, switching typically isn't possible without losing assessed coursework time.
Common mistake: waiting until Year 2 mocks go badly before asking about a switch. By then most schools have closed the window, and you're stuck cramming HL content with no fallback. If HL is genuinely struggling by the end of Year 1, raise it with your coordinator immediately rather than hoping Year 2 improves things.
How do I get a 7 in Maths HL?
Target three things: flawless non-calculator algebra for Paper 1, fluent GDC use for Paper 2, and sustained stamina for Paper 3's extended problem-solving. Grade 7 candidates in my experience aren't the fastest — they're the ones who never lose marks to arithmetic slips or missed working, which examiners penalise even when the method is right.
A worked example of the habit that separates 6s from 7s: on a Paper 3-style question asking you to conjecture a general term from a recurrence relation, a 6-grade answer states the pattern; a 7-grade answer proves it by induction, showing the base case, the inductive hypothesis, and the inductive step explicitly — because that's exactly what the markscheme rewards under the 'Reasoning' criterion.
What's the workload difference between SL and HL Maths?
HL typically means around 4-5 taught hours a week against SL's roughly 3-4, spread across two years, plus a noticeably denser homework load once Paper 3-style problem-solving starts in Year 2. Many students report HL Maths alone taking as long as two SL subjects combined during exam term.
| Factor | SL | HL |
|---|---|---|
| Taught hours (approx.) | 150 total | 240 total |
| Exam papers | 2 | 3 |
| Extra content | — | Proof, extended calculus/stats |
| Typical weekly homework | 2-3 hrs | 4-6 hrs |
Comparisons & University Choices
Do universities require HL Maths?
Many competitive engineering, physics, computer science and economics degrees do specify HL Maths (often AA HL specifically), especially at UK Russell Group universities and top US/Canadian STEM programmes. Business, biology-adjacent and humanities degrees generally accept SL, so check your child's specific target course list rather than assuming.
Quick tip: check three sources before finalising the choice — the university's official admissions page, the specific department (not just the general prospectus), and, where available, the IB subject requirements grid the school's university counsellor keeps. Requirements shift year to year and by campus.
Is Maths AI HL respected by universities the same as AA HL?
Most universities treat both AI HL and AA HL as equivalent 'Higher Level Mathematics' for general admissions purposes, but some specific STEM departments (particularly engineering and physics) explicitly prefer or require AA HL because of its heavier calculus and proof content. Always check the department's stated requirement, not just the general faculty page.
If your target course lists 'Mathematics HL' without specifying AA or AI, that usually means either is accepted. If it names 'Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches HL' specifically, AI HL won't satisfy the requirement, so confirm before Year 1 subject selection is locked in.
Is it better to get a 6 in HL Maths or a 7 in SL Maths for university?
For a course that requires HL Maths, a 6 at HL usually satisfies the requirement where a 7 at SL wouldn't, since the level (not just the grade) is the gatekeeper condition. For courses with no HL requirement, the higher overall points a 7 SL gives you generally wins.
This is exactly why the switch-deadline question matters: know your target course's requirement before Year 1 ends, not after your Year 2 mock results come in.
Exam & Syllabus Detail
What topics are only in HL Maths, not SL?
HL adds proof by induction, more advanced calculus (including further differential equations in AA), matrices, complex number applications, and — critically — Paper 3, a 60-mark extended-response paper drawing on the whole syllabus. AI HL instead extends into more advanced statistics, discrete maths structures, and voronoi/graph theory topics.
According to the current IB Mathematics guide (first assessed 2021, remaining current for 2025 exam sessions), HL students in both AA and AI sit three externally assessed papers worth 30% (P1), 30% (P2) and 20% (P3) of the final grade, plus the 20% internal assessment common to both levels and both routes.
How many papers does IB Maths HL have compared to SL?
SL students sit two papers: Paper 1 (no calculator) and Paper 2 (GDC allowed), each worth 40% of the final grade, plus a 20% internally assessed exploration. HL students sit those same two papers plus Paper 3, an additional 20%-weighted extended problem-solving paper unique to HL.
| SL | HL | |
|---|---|---|
| Paper 1 | 40% | 30% |
| Paper 2 | 40% | 30% |
| Paper 3 | — | 20% |
| Internal Assessment | 20% | 20% |
