RevisionPrep FAQ
How MYP Physics Prepares You for DP Physics
Answered by RevisionPrep's IB Educators
Answered by RevisionPrep's IB Educators. I've taught Physics across both programmes, and the gap between MYP 4-5 and DP catches students out in the same places every year — usually the maths, not the concepts. Here's what actually carries over, what doesn't, and what to start practising now.
Concept & Content: What Carries Over
How MYP physics prepares you for DP: what do MYP Physics students need to know?
MYP Physics builds the conceptual scaffolding — forces, energy, waves, electricity — that DP Physics later quantifies with calculus and equations. What MYP doesn't give you is exam technique or the maths fluency DP demands, so students who coast through Year 4-5 criteria work often struggle with SL/HL's mathematical rigour in Year 1.
Three things genuinely transfer: scientific vocabulary, the habit of designing a fair test, and comfort reading graphs. What doesn't transfer automatically: algebraic manipulation under time pressure, unit conversion speed, and writing to IB command terms like 'evaluate' or 'deduce' rather than just 'describe'.
What topics from MYP Physics carry over into DP Physics?
Mechanics, energy transfers, waves, and basic electricity in MYP map directly onto DP's Topic 2 (Mechanics), Topic 5 (Electricity and magnetism), and Topic 9 (Wave phenomena). The concepts are familiar; what changes is that DP expects equations, not just qualitative descriptions, and expects you to derive relationships rather than just state them.
For example, MYP asks you to describe why a ball slows down going uphill. DP SL asks you to calculate the deceleration using and then apply it in a two-stage kinematics problem — same physics, far more algebra.
Does MYP Physics cover the same content as DP Physics SL/HL?
No — MYP Physics is broader and shallower by design, covering ideas conceptually across Years 4-5, while DP Physics goes narrower and far deeper into fewer topics with real mathematical modelling. Think of MYP as building the vocabulary; DP is where you learn to speak fluently in equations and uncertainties.
Skills to Build Before DP
What skills should I build in MYP 4-5 Physics to succeed in DP Physics?
Get fast and accurate with algebra, unit conversions, and significant figures — these are the three things that quietly sink otherwise capable DP Physics students in their first term. Also practise reading command terms carefully: 'state', 'explain', and 'evaluate' each need a different length and structure of answer.
Quick tip: before starting DP, drill converting between units without a calculator — km/h to m/s, grams to kilograms, nanometres to metres. I see students lose a full mark on an otherwise correct IA calculation because they forgot to convert cm to m before squaring it in an area formula.
How important are MYP Physics criteria (A-D) for DP success?
The MYP Sciences criteria — A (Knowing and understanding), B (Inquiring and designing), C (Processing and evaluating), D (Reflecting on impacts of science) — map closely onto DP's assessment objectives and internal assessment structure, so strong criterion habits genuinely help. Criterion B and C especially prefigure the DP Physics IA's research question and data analysis sections.
Should I start DP-style practice questions while still in MYP?
Yes, in Year 5 especially — a few past DP Physics SL paper 1 questions each month will show you exactly where the maths gap is before it costs you a grade. Don't attempt full HL papers yet; the content isn't taught, but the multiple-choice reasoning style is worth getting used to early.
A simple plan for the second half of Year 5:
- Do 10 DP Physics SL Paper 1 questions on mechanics (content you've already covered conceptually).
- Mark them against the mark scheme, not just the answer key.
- Note every mistake that was a maths error, not a physics error — that's your real gap.
Exam & Syllabus Differences
What's the difference between MYP eAssessment and DP Physics exams?
MYP on-screen eAssessment is criterion-based, untimed-feeling and scenario-driven, testing broad scientific thinking across subjects. DP Physics exams are subject-specific, strictly timed, and split into Paper 1 (multiple choice), Paper 2 (structured/extended response), and for HL, Paper 3 (option topics and data-based questions) — a much narrower, calculation-heavy format.
When does DP Physics start and what's changed in the current syllabus?
According to the IB, the current DP Physics guide had first teaching in 2023 and first exams in 2025, replacing the old options-based structure with an Applications-and-Skills approach woven through nine core topics for SL and eleven for HL. MYP students entering DP now study this newer, more data-and-technology-focused syllabus.
Does MYP Physics use the same practical/IA skills as DP?
MYP practical investigations (Criterion B and C) teach the same bones as the DP Physics Internal Assessment — a research question, a method, raw data, processed data, and an evaluation of uncertainties. DP's IA is worth 20% of the final grade and requires roughly 10 hours of work, so those MYP habits matter more than most students realise.
Choosing & Preparing (Parents)
Should my child take MYP Physics if they're considering DP Physics HL?
Yes — MYP Physics in Years 4-5, combined with strong Maths results, is the clearest indicator a school has for whether a student is ready for DP Physics HL. Schools generally look for consistent Level 6-7 achievement across the four MYP Sciences criteria before recommending HL rather than SL.
Is MYP Physics compulsory before DP Physics, or can students switch subjects?
MYP doesn't gatekeep DP subject choice the way some national curricula do — a student can take DP Physics without having taken MYP Physics as a discrete subject, though it's genuinely harder. Most schools that offer both strongly recommend continuity, since the maths and lab-skills gap is real without it.
How can parents support the transition from MYP to DP Physics?
The single most useful thing a parent can do is check your child's Maths level is solid before DP Physics starts — weak algebra, not weak physics understanding, is the number one reason MYP-strong students struggle in their first DP Physics term. Ask their MYP teacher directly about maths readiness, not just physics grades.
Common mistake: parents (and students) assume a strong MYP Physics criterion level guarantees DP readiness. It doesn't — Criterion A tests understanding, not calculation speed. A student can hold Level 7 in MYP Physics and still need real work on manipulating equations before September of DP Year 1.
Resources & Cost
What resources help MYP students prepare for DP Physics?
Look for resources built specifically around the current DP Physics syllabus — topical worksheets by subtopic, revision notes that show the maths step-by-step, and mock papers marked against real IB criteria — rather than generic GCSE-style physics books, which don't match the IB's command-term style or data-analysis focus.
MYP Physics vs DP Physics
| Aspect | MYP Physics (Yr 4-5) | DP Physics (SL/HL) |
| Assessment | Criteria A-D, projects | External exams + IA (20%) |
| Maths demand | Basic algebra, graphs | Algebra, some calculus (HL) |
| Content depth | Conceptual, broad | Quantitative, narrow, deep |
| Practical work | Inquiry investigations | IA, ~10 hrs, formal write-up |
| Grading scale | 1-7 by criterion level | 1-7 with fixed grade boundaries |
For the maths-heavy transition points MYP doesn't fully prepare you for, RevisionPrep's DP Physics Revision Notes and Topical Worksheets break each subtopic into the exact equations and command-term practice you'll need from day one of Year 1.
