MYP Physics to DP: How to Prepare for the Jump

Answered by RevisionPrep's IB Educators

MYP Physics builds the conceptual habits DP Physics demands, but it doesn't hand you the maths, the exam technique or the pace. I've taught both ends of this transition for years — here's exactly where the jump bites and how to get ahead of it before your DP course starts.

What Actually Changes Between MYP and DP

How does MYP Physics prepare you for the DP?

MYP Physics builds the inquiry cycle, data handling and scientific writing you'll reuse in DP — the criteria-based habit of stating a claim, backing it with evidence and reasoning maps directly onto DP's Internal Assessment and exam-response structure. What it doesn't build is DP's maths load, formal command terms or exam pace, which you have to add yourself.

Concretely, three MYP skills carry over almost untouched:

  1. Criterion C (Processing and Evaluating) habits — identifying trends, calculating percentage uncertainty, evaluating method — become the backbone of DP's Applications and Investigation criteria.
  2. Scientific inquiry, from MYP Criterion A, becomes your DP research question skill.
  3. Graphing and units discipline from MYP labs is exactly what DP examiners expect in Paper 3 data questions.

What's missing: algebraic manipulation under time pressure, and the command-term precision ("derive", "determine", "state and explain") that DP Paper 1 and 2 mark schemes reward specifically.

What's the difference between MYP Physics and DP Physics?

MYP Physics is criteria-based (four criteria, best-fit levels 1-8 each), broadly conceptual and largely descriptive. DP Physics — assessed the same way whether you sit Standard or Higher Level — is exam-graded 1-7, maths-heavy, and covers material at real depth, including calculus-adjacent reasoning at HL that MYP never touches.

Is DP Physics much harder than MYP Physics?

Yes — noticeably. DP Physics moves from mostly qualitative reasoning to sustained quantitative problem-solving, often across two or three physics concepts in one exam question. The IB's own DP Physics guide (first exams 2025) lists topics like circular motion, fields and simple harmonic motion that MYP simply doesn't cover in any depth.

It's not that DP is a different subject — it's the same ideas (forces, energy, waves) but pushed three or four steps further, with algebra doing the heavy lifting instead of description.

How to Prepare Before DP Starts

What should I revise over the summer before starting DP Physics?

Spend the summer before DP tightening algebra, not re-reading MYP notes. Rearranging equations, working with standard form and significant figures, and basic trigonometry (SOH CAH TOA) will matter far more in your first month of DP than any physics content review.

Quick tip: try rearranging to solve for , and in turn, then do the same for and . If that takes more than a minute per equation, that's your priority, not memorising more MYP content.

Should I choose Physics SL or HL after MYP?

Choose HL if you enjoyed the maths side of MYP Science and Maths and scored consistently at levels 6-8 in Criterion C. Choose SL if physics interests you but algebra and graph interpretation felt like the harder parts — HL adds real calculus-adjacent content that SL doesn't touch.

A pattern I see every year: students who found MYP Maths' linear/quadratic functions genuinely enjoyable, not just manageable, tend to cope far better with HL's extra topics (like relativity or engineering physics options at HL) than those who found MYP Maths a grind.

What maths skills does DP Physics need that MYP doesn't teach in depth?

DP Physics assumes fluency in rearranging multi-variable equations, working confidently with logarithms and exponentials, basic trigonometric ratios, and vector addition — none of which get sustained practice in MYP Science. HL adds simple differentiation and integration concepts for topics like simple harmonic motion.

3 things worth checking before September:

  1. Can you rearrange an equation with three variables without writing out every step?
  2. Do you know when to use , or in a right-angled triangle without hesitating?
  3. Can you add two vectors at an angle using components?

If any answer is no, that's a week's worth of targeted practice, not a whole term's worry.

How do I get better at IB-style exam questions coming from MYP?

Start by learning DP's command terms properly — "state", "explain" and "derive" each demand a different length and structure of answer, and MYP rarely trains this distinction explicitly. Then practise past-paper-style questions under a timer, since DP's pace is far tighter than any MYP assessment.

Common mistake: treating "explain" like MYP's "describe" and writing one sentence. DP mark schemes usually award marks for a chain of reasoning — cause, mechanism, effect — not just a stated fact.

Worked Example: Bridging a Real MYP-to-DP Gap

Can you show a worked example of an MYP concept extended into DP Physics?

Take circular motion. In MYP you might describe why a ball on a string moves in a circle. In DP, you calculate the centripetal force quantitatively, using , and combine it with other forces like gravity in multi-step problems.

Worked example: A 0.20 kg ball moves in a horizontal circle of radius 0.50 m at 4.0 m/s.

Step 1: Identify the formula:

Step 2: Substitute values:

Step 3: Calculate:

This is exactly the kind of two-line calculation DP Paper 1 and Paper 2 expect fluently — MYP would only ask you to name the force involved, not calculate it.

What's a common mistake students make in the first term of DP Physics?

The most common mistake is skipping units and significant figures under time pressure — a habit MYP is more forgiving of but DP examiners penalise directly through the mark scheme. Losing a mark on an otherwise correct calculation for missing units is entirely avoidable and happens constantly in the first term.

Second most common: writing long descriptive answers to "calculate" questions instead of just showing working and a final numerical answer with units — DP rewards precision, not prose, on Paper 1 and 2 numerical questions.

Parent Questions: Support & Resources

How can I support my child through the MYP to DP Physics transition?

The most useful thing you can do isn't reteaching physics — it's protecting time for algebra and trigonometry practice over the summer before DP starts, since that's the gap that actually slows students down in the first term, not physics content itself.

Ask your child to show you one rearranged equation a day for a fortnight before term starts. It's a small habit, but it compounds — students who arrive fluent in algebra spend their first DP term learning physics, not relearning maths.

What resources help bridge MYP Physics and DP Physics?

Look for resources that cover both the conceptual bridge and the exam-technique gap — not just more physics content. On RevisionPrep, MYP Physics Revision Notes and DP Physics Topical Worksheets are built to sit either side of this exact transition, so a student can move from one to the other without a content gap.

A worksheet-first approach works better than re-reading notes at this stage — the gap is mostly about applying knowledge under timed, quantitative conditions, which only practice questions actually train.

Does doing well in MYP Physics guarantee a good DP Physics grade?

No — MYP levels and DP grades measure different things, so a strong MYP Criterion result doesn't automatically translate. A student at level 7-8 across MYP criteria has the conceptual foundation for a strong DP start, but the maths and exam-pace demands of DP mean early grades often dip before recovering.

It's genuinely normal for a strong MYP physics student to sit their first DP Physics test and get a grade 4 or 5 rather than a 7 — the assessment style has changed completely, not the student's ability.
