RevisionPrep FAQ
What Is the MYP Physics eAssessment and What's On It?
Answered by RevisionPrep's IB Educators
Answered by RevisionPrep's IB educators. The MYP Physics eAssessment is the on-screen exam some schools use to validate your MYP 4-5 Physics grade — two computer-based papers testing all four assessment criteria through data analysis, simulations and short-answer questions, sat in May under strict IB conditions.
Exam & Syllabus
What is the MYP Physics eAssessment and what's on it?
The MYP Physics eAssessment is an on-screen exam sat in May by MYP 4-5 students, testing all four assessment criteria — Knowing and Understanding, Inquiring and Designing, Processing and Evaluating, Reflecting on Impacts — through two on-screen papers combining data-response, short-answer and simulation-based questions.
According to the IB, on-screen eAssessments for sciences have run every May since 2016, built on the criteria set out in the MYP: Sciences guide (first taught 2014) — the same four criteria your school uses for every internally-assessed Physics unit.
How is the MYP Physics eAssessment structured and timed?
Structurally it's two on-screen papers, each roughly two hours, sat in the same eAssessment week each May. Paper 1 mixes shorter data-response and multiple-choice items across all criteria; Paper 2 leans into extended scenarios with embedded simulations and longer written responses, weighted about equally.
Rough breakdown (timings can shift slightly by session):
- Paper 1: mostly Criteria A and B, shorter items, faster pace.
- Paper 2: mostly Criteria C and D, longer scenarios, graphing and simulation tools built into the interface.
What command terms and criteria does the MYP Physics eAssessment use?
Every question maps to one of the four MYP Sciences criteria — A Knowing and Understanding, B Inquiring and Designing, C Processing and Evaluating, D Reflecting on Impacts — using command terms straight from the MYP subject guide, like 'outline', 'analyse', 'construct' and 'evaluate', each demanding a specific depth of response.
Quick tip: 'outline' wants a brief account, no justification needed. 'Analyse' wants you to break data down and interpret it. 'Evaluate' wants a balanced judgement with a justified conclusion. Answering an 'evaluate' question at 'outline' depth is the single most common mark-loss I see in mock eAssessments.
What tools and calculator are allowed in the eAssessment?
You get an on-screen scientific calculator, periodic table and any formula sheet built into the exam software — no personal calculators, phones or paper reference sheets are permitted. Everything you need, including graphing tools for Paper 2's data questions, sits inside the on-screen exam interface itself.
Because every tool lives inside the software, it's worth practising with the IB's specimen papers before your actual session — the interface itself takes some getting used to under timed conditions.
Difficulty & Grades
How is the MYP Physics eAssessment graded?
Each of the four criteria is marked out of 8, giving a total out of 32, which the IB converts into a MYP grade from 1 to 7 using grade boundaries set after each May session. Those boundaries shift slightly year to year depending on how the cohort performs.
Worked example: a student scoring 7, 6, 6, 7 across the four criteria totals 26/32. In a typical session that lands in the grade 6 band — but boundaries are reset each May by the IB's grade award process, so the same raw score won't always convert to the same grade.
Is the MYP Physics eAssessment hard?
Yes, more than most school-based physics tests — you're working against the clock with unfamiliar stimulus material, not questions your own teacher wrote. In my experience coaching MYP students, the real difficulty isn't the physics content itself but reading dense data sets fast enough to answer every criterion within the time limit.
Students who've only ever sat teacher-written tests underestimate how much slower unfamiliar data sets are to process. That's the gap timed practice closes fastest.
How to Prepare
How do I prepare for the MYP Physics eAssessment?
Start with past on-screen sample papers from the IB's MYP eAssessment specimen materials, then time yourself strictly — the biggest cause of dropped marks is running out of time on Paper 2's extended scenarios, not lack of physics knowledge. Practising criterion-specific command terms weekly closes that gap fast.
A five-step run-up:
- Work through IB specimen eAssessment papers under real time limits.
- Build a command-term glossary specific to Physics.
- Practice Paper 2-style data and simulation scenarios weekly.
- Sit one full timed mock two weeks before the real session.
- Review Criterion D (Reflecting on Impacts) — usually the weakest-scoring area.
What's the difference between on-screen examination and ePortfolio in MYP Physics?
Schools pick one validation route per subject: the on-screen eAssessment (timed exams in May) or the ePortfolio (coursework built across the year and moderated by the IB). Physics ePortfolios showcase your best criterion-based tasks from class; the eAssessment instead tests you cold, under exam conditions, on unfamiliar material.
If your school uses the ePortfolio route, ask your teacher which pieces of coursework get submitted — those tasks matter far more than any single test.
Comparisons & Choices
Do all MYP schools require the eAssessment?
No — the MYP eAssessment is optional. Each school chooses, subject by subject, between the IB's on-screen eAssessment, the ePortfolio route, or purely school-based assessment with no external IB validation at all. Ask your child's school directly which route Physics uses, since it changes how results are calculated and reported.
Worth checking at the start of MYP 4, not MYP 5 — the route affects how much external, IB-set exam practice your child needs across the two years.
Is the MYP Physics eAssessment the same as IB DP Physics exams?
No, they're different qualifications entirely. The MYP eAssessment validates a student's Physics grade at age 14-16 as part of the MYP certificate; DP Physics exams (Paper 1, 2 and 3) sit two years later and count toward the full 45-point Diploma score. Content, depth and stakes are not comparable.
See our full comparison table below for how the two actually differ in format, grading and purpose.
How does the MYP Physics eAssessment prepare you for DP sciences?
It builds two habits DP Physics rewards immediately: reading unfamiliar data sets under time pressure, and answering to a specific command term rather than writing everything you know. Students who've sat the eAssessment usually adapt faster to DP Physics Paper 3's data-based questions than those from purely school-graded MYP courses.
If your child is heading into DP Sciences, our MYP to DP Physics transition guide covers exactly which MYP skills carry straight across into Paper 3.
Cost & Resources
How much does the MYP eAssessment cost and who pays?
Registration fees are paid by the school to the IB per subject entered, not typically billed to families as a separate line item — though some schools do pass part of the cost on through tuition or an exam fee. Ask your school's IB coordinator exactly how Physics eAssessment fees are handled.
Fee structures vary by school and region, so a direct question to the MYP coordinator will get you a firmer answer than any general estimate.
