Economics: How Price Signals Restore Market Equilibrium


When two forces act on a market at the same time, the outcome is rarely a simple shift along a static curve—it is a story of competing pressures. In microeconomics, the price mechanism is the invisible coordinator that reconciles these pressures, using price signals to guide buyers and sellers toward a balance. In the case of hand sanitizer during the pandemic, demand surged while supply contracted, creating a visible rupture at the original price. Understanding this adjustment is not just about drawing arrows; it is about grasping how markets self-correct through shortages and surpluses. At the initial equilibrium price P1, the simultaneous rightward shift of demand (D1 to D2) and leftward shift of supply (S1 to S2) produce a condition where quantity demanded exceeds quantity supplied—an excess demand, or shortage. This gap is the engine of change. The shortage exerts upward pressure on price, which then performs a dual role: it discourages some buyers (contraction of quantity demanded along D2) while encouraging producers to offer more (expansion of quantity supplied along S2). This process continues until the two quantities converge at a new, higher equilibrium price P2, where the final quantity traded may be higher, lower, or unchanged relative to Q1—an indeterminate result that depends on the relative size of the shifts. The price mechanism, therefore, transforms a moment of disequilibrium into a new market clearing state.
