It looks reasonable on paper, but it ignores a crucial variable: the material cost of $5 per bracelet. The core concept here is model validation and refinement—checking whether an expression truly reflects reality, then adjusting it when it doesn’t. By adding the material cost, the improved model becomes profit = 20x − 5x − 50 = 15x − 50. This small change alters the outcome at low sales volumes, revealing a loss where the original model showed a gain. The lesson is that every term in a formula represents a real-world factor, and omitting one can lead to flawed decisions—like ordering supplies based on an overestimated profit.
