Maths: Why Formulas Fail: Substitution and Real-World Limits


Substitution into expressions and formulae is one of the most practical skills in mathematics, because it lets you turn a real‑world situation into a number you can act on. When you replace a variable with a specific value, you are testing how a rule behaves under given conditions. In this case, the rule is Total cost = 8 × number of students + 15, where 8 represents the food and drink cost per student and 15 is a fixed booking fee. The key idea is that a formula is only as valid as the assumptions hidden inside it. Here, the 8 per student assumes every student will eat the provided food. If some students bring their own lunch, that assumption breaks: those students should not be charged 8 dollars each. As a result, the formula overestimates the true total cost. This shows why substitution is not just about plugging in numbers—it is about checking whether the structure of the expression still matches the reality it describes. Understanding this connection between variables, constants, and assumptions is what makes substitution a powerful tool for modelling and decision‑making.
