Physics: Why Speed and Velocity Are Not the Same


In physics, the way we describe motion often comes down to a single, crucial distinction: is a quantity just a number, or does it carry a sense of direction? This is the heart of scalar and vector quantities. Speed and velocity are the perfect pair to illustrate this. While both measure how fast an object is moving, they are fundamentally different in what they tell us about the world. Speed is a scalar quantity, meaning it only has magnitude—a simple value like 80 km/h. It answers the question “how fast?” Velocity, on the other hand, is a vector quantity. It includes both that magnitude and a direction, such as 80 km/h North. This added directional component is not just a detail; it changes the physical meaning. For instance, a car rounding a curve at a constant speed is continuously changing its velocity because its direction is changing. Understanding this relationship between magnitude and direction is foundational for analysing motion, as it connects directly to concepts like acceleration, which itself is a vector describing the rate of change of velocity.
