Fractions and decimals sit at the heart of scaling recipes, mixing solutions, and converting measurements, yet their behaviour changes the moment a physical tool enters the picture. Halving a mixed number such as 2 1/3 means multiplying by 1/2, converting to an improper fraction (7/3), multiplying, then returning to mixed form — a process that yields an exact, proportionally consistent result every time. That precision matters because the arithmetic models the real world perfectly, but the real world rarely measures perfectly. When a measuring cup is marked only in increments of 1/8, an exact fractional answer may fall between markings, so the nearest measurable value introduces a small error. Understanding this gap between theoretical exactness and finite resolution is what turns fraction arithmetic from a classroom procedure into a genuinely reliable modelling tool.
