Physics: Why Forces Are Not Just Numbers to Add


When a rescue drone drags a supply crate across flat ground, the crate rarely moves because of a single force. Instead, several forces act at once, and their combined effect — the resultant force — determines how the crate accelerates. This is the heart of vector addition: forces have both magnitude and direction, so they cannot simply be added as ordinary numbers. Forces acting at right angles are a special and important case. Because the perpendicular components are independent, the net force is found using the Pythagorean theorem: Fnet = √(Feast² + Fnorth²). Each component contributes to the total without cancelling the other, so the resultant lies diagonally between them. Understanding this relationship matters because it explains how balanced and unbalanced forces govern motion in real systems, from drones to bridges. Mastering it means seeing forces as vectors to be resolved and combined, not just numbers to be summed.
