Biology: One Factory, Two Kinds of Pollution

Environmental pollution rarely stays where it starts. A factory releasing smoke into the air and dirty water into a river shows how one source can trigger several kinds of pollution at once — water pollution in the river and air pollution from the chimney — and how these pathways interconnect rather than act in isolation. Understanding these links matters because the harm often travels further than expected. Nutrient-rich dirty water feeds rapid algae growth; as the algae decompose, oxygen in the water is used up, so fish cannot breathe and die. Meanwhile, smoke and harmful gases released into the air do not simply vanish — they can fall or wash back down into the river, poisoning the water and the life within it. Recognising these connections between air, water and living organisms is essential for seeing pollution as one linked system, where each part affects the others.
