Physics: How Grounding Makes Lightning Safer
Static electricity builds up when charge accumulates on an object, and current electricity flows when that charge moves through a conductor. During a thunderstorm, enormous charge separation in clouds creates a huge potential difference between cloud and ground, which can discharge suddenly as lightning. Managing that discharge safely is the focus here. A lightning rod works because metals are excellent conductors: charge flows easily along the rod instead of forcing its way through brick, wood or concrete, which could heat up, crack or ignite. The connecting wire matters just as much, since it gives the charge a low-resistance route to dissipate harmlessly into the Earth. Grounding therefore turns a destructive surge into a controlled, safe transfer of charge, protecting both the structure and the people inside it.
