Physics: The Invisible Waste Behind a Wind Turbine


Energy cannot be created or destroyed — only transferred between forms. That single idea, the law of conservation of energy, underpins everything from a falling apple to a wind turbine spinning on a hillside. In any real system, the total energy input must equal the total energy output, split between what we actually want and what escapes as heat, sound, or other by-products. No device is perfectly efficient. This matters because efficiency shapes real decisions. A turbine turning wind's kinetic energy into electricity loses energy to friction in its bearings and generator, and to the noise of rotating blades. Comparing useful output to total input, efficiency = useful output ÷ total input × 100, reveals how much is wasted. For a community depending on a single turbine, that figure — alongside the variability of wind itself — determines whether the system can reliably meet its needs.
