Biology: The Simple Principle Behind Every Niche


Every organism occupies a space defined not just by where it can live, but by where it actually does. This distinction sits at the heart of ecology: the fundamental niche describes the full range of conditions and resources a species could theoretically exploit, while the realized niche is the narrower portion it truly occupies once competitors, predators and other biotic pressures are factored in. Connell's classic rocky intertidal study brings this abstract idea to life. Chthamalus stellatus can survive in the lower zone when Semibalanus balanoides is removed, revealing that its fundamental niche extends well beyond its usual upper-shore home. Reintroduce Semibalanus, and Chthamalus is pushed back upward — competition compresses its realized niche. This barnacle system is a clean demonstration of a general principle: the realized niche is the fundamental niche minus the effects of competition. Understanding this relationship helps explain why species live where they do, and why removing one organism can reshape another's entire range.
