Biology: Why Habitat Adaptations Are Vital for Survival

Every living thing is shaped by the place it calls home. Habitats and adaptations explore how organisms survive in environments as different as a scorching desert, a shaded forest, and a freshwater pond. Each habitat presents its own challenges — scarce water, limited light, or low oxygen — and the species living there have evolved features that meet them. This matters because survival depends on fit: an organism's structures and behaviours must match the demands of its surroundings. A cactus stores water in a thick stem to endure drought; a tree's broad, flat leaves capture sunlight for photosynthesis; a fish's gills extract oxygen from water. In each case, a specific adaptation connects directly to a survival need, showing how form follows function. Understanding these links reveals why organisms thrive where they do — and why removing one adaptation can threaten an entire species.
