Physics: Complete the Circuit, Unlock the Current

Electrical circuits depend on a simple but powerful idea: charge only moves when it has a complete, unbroken path to follow. A circuit containing a battery, a bulb, and a switch is the classic example. The battery provides the driving force, or potential difference, that pushes electrons around the loop, while the bulb converts electrical energy into light and heat as current passes through it. The switch acts as the control point, either completing or breaking that path. This matters because circuit continuity determines whether any current flows at all. When the switch is open, the circuit is incomplete, so no current can circulate and the bulb stays off. When the switch is closed, the circuit becomes complete, allowing current to flow from the battery through the bulb, which lights up. In short, current depends on an unbroken conducting path, and the relationship between voltage, current, and resistance is captured by V = IR.
