Physics: Why Some Magnets Stay Magnetic


Magnetic domains are the microscopic regions inside ferromagnetic materials where the magnetic fields of individual atoms point in the same direction. When these domains align collectively, their combined effect produces a measurable magnetic field — the same field that lets a paperclip cling to a magnet. This concept matters because it explains why some magnets work forever while others die the instant you flip a switch. In a permanent magnet, domains stay permanently aligned, generating a constant field with no external energy input. In an electromagnet, the field exists only while current flows through a coil; break the circuit and the field collapses. Understanding this contrast — between intrinsic, permanent alignment and field produced on demand — is central to explaining ferromagnetic behaviour, magnetic attraction, and why a paperclip falls the moment the battery is disconnected.
